Feed your Soul

I remember when my mom started to sell her curry powder back in 1984.  I was a little girl with no understanding of the hardship she was experiencing to raise me.  My mom had placed a signed on the gate of our home to let everyone in the community know that she will be selling curry powder, and our neighbours started to buy it.  At that time, I was in primary school.

I went on to high school and I was then shopping at the wholesale shop on my way home to purchase the ingredients for my mom. I remember not wanting to do this errand sometimes, but then I had a better understanding of her financial hardship and knew that I need to do this, no matter what.

I was also tasked at times to help with grounding the spices, which I did not always wanted to do, but after much procrastination and nagging from my mom, I completed this task many times.

I finished college and immediately migrated to London, England through a work exchange program for college and university students.  I remember buying curry powder from the shop in London to cook curry chicken and the flavour was bland in comparison to my mom’s curry powder.

After leaving home for approximately 2 years, I went back to visit and made sure to stock up on my mom’s curry powder.  Every opportunity I got to stock up on my mom’s curry powder, whether from my visits or from friends’ and family visits, I always seize the opportunity to make sure my curry jar was filled.

The sign on the gate had disappeared after a short while but it was then known by many people that my mom sells curry powder, and there was never a need to put back up the sign.  I was always amazed at how she could sell her curry powder for so long with no branding or marketing. And for many years I thought about branding Esmen’s Curry Powder.  I finally decided to follow my desire, one that had lingered in my thoughts for so long, and I spoke with my mom about my ideas.  And her response was that she too had always thought about branding and marketing Esmen’s Curry Powder (and the higher source aligned our thoughts).

So, we journeyed on this business idea and today our hearts are warmed, and our souls are fed from doing what we’ve always wanted to do.
